Film Processing Laboratory
Both (S)16 and (S)35mm camera negative (colour) can be processed at the highest quality. Also black and white prints can be developed at this laboratory.
For more than one hundred years, analogue film has been chemically processed on the basis of silver salt crystals in a photographic emulsion. Cineco can process virtually all commercially produced film types (both 16 and 35mm).
At Cineco, there are four operational processes to develop camera colour negative, colour intermediate/internegative, colour positive and black-and-white negative and positive. In order to obtain the right look gradation for the different kinds of film material and/or different photographical wishes/circumstances, we can adapt the developing processes (e.g. pull/push, bleach-bypass).
Cineco has an extensive sensitometric and chemical quality control in order to guarantee the quality of the laboratory activities. The emphasis has shifted towards the relationship between analogue and digital image quality since an increasing number of film productions are choosing a digital intermediate post-production. Furthermore, Cineco endeavours to reduce the emission of polluting substances by regenerating used photographical liquids in compliance with the Dutch environmental laws.
Print facilities
Cineco disposes of a large range of printers (12 in total) which enables us to print every commercial format of film material. The Bell & Howell ModCs are equipped with Smitzer wetgate as well as with a licensed Dolby Digital sound track.
Cineco can also deliver a high number of prints for distribution, all of the best quality. For special (archival) formats and blow-ups, we use a TAI printer and Seiki Optical Printer respectively. More information on this can be found on the Haghefilm website.
Video Scanning Telecine
For one- and best-light transfers of (S)16mm and (S)35mm (both 3 and 4 perf), Cineco has a URSA Y-front Telecine. The Aaton keylink makes sure that both the Aaton and Arri timecodes can be integrated in the database. All transfers are colour corrected with Da Vinci before recording it to DigiBeta, Betacam SP, mini DV, DV Cam and/or DVD.
Data Scanning
Elaborate negative cutting is now history with the new ARRI scanner. Based on the EDL, both 16 and 35 mm can now be scanned to 2, 4 or 6 K (10 bit log colour depth) in a fast and stable manner. Cineco has also invested in the KODAK Digital ICE technology. This infrared "dust and scratch removal" system significantly reduces the amount of dustbusting at later stages of the post-production.
Digital Intermediate facilities
Since 2005, Cineco has had two large screen digital grading studio's with the Digital Vision Nucoda Film Master linked to a calibrated 2K Barco DP90-P projector. The Nucoda Filmmaster can handle both primary and secondary grading (e.g. masking, tracking, layering, etcetera) and play back in real time. Moreover, it is possible to finish the on-line edit with the Nucoda Filmcutter.
Cineco often uses Digital Fusion to create titles and optical effects, which upon completion can be integrated with the rest of the data of any digital post-production. The availability of Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere also enables us to change or check edits during post-production if this is required.
35mm Recording
Colour corrected film data can be recorded (2K, 10 bit log colour depth) to 35mm intermediate negative in all existing cinema formats ranging from Academy (1.33:1) to Scope (2.35:1). To this end, Cineco uses the ARRI laser Filmrecorder. We accept a large range of digital sources for our recordings (e.g. DigiBeta, DPX, Cineon, Tiff). A complete list can be obtained from the sales department.
Sound Facilities
Cineco's THX/Dolby approved sound studio disposes of the Yamaha DM2000 mixing table. This mix table has 96 digital inputs and can be configured for final mixes in Dolby™ Digital 5.1 (film, DVD and video), Dolby™ SR 3.1 (film) or "normal" stereo (video and CD). All settings and mix balances are fully automated and can be saved so that changes or adjustments can be made at any time, even years later.
With the Protools HD axel 3 V7.2.1 (CedarTools Auto Dehiss, Declip, Retouch Plug-in) digital audio editing system, we can also complete any sound edit in a quick and reliable way.
Adjacent to Cineco's control room, there is a very spacious Foley room (45 sq. m). It is equipped with a large array of floors and other materials to create a vast number of sound effects. The same room can also be utilised as a recording room for film dubbing or audio commentary. All rooms are separated by double glazing (THX norm) which makes sure that, next to the audio talk-back, there is also visual contact between mixer, director and artist.
Film projection
In order for the client to approve the final result, Cineco has created a special viewing room with 28 comfortable chairs. Cinemascope, (S)35 and (S)16mm film can be projected, with or without sound (Optical with Dolby Digital® or Dolby Stereo SVA® and DTS®, magnetic via sync DAT). This room can also be booked for special meetings or presentations.
